Solidarity fund

From the organiser's Help guide. This is the page an organiser reads inside their own admin, exactly as they see it. On the demo you can read it but not open the admin behind it.

Money → Solidarity fund · switched on in Site settings → Features → Solidarity payments

The solidarity fund is money people give so that others can come at a reduced price, or free. It fills up two ways and empties one way:

The box on the booking formAn optional “Solidarity contribution (£)” box while someone books. Whatever they type is added to their card payment and goes into the fund. See Who sees the box below.
Your give-to-the-fund linkA web page of its own where anyone can give an amount by card without booking anything — someone who was helped once and wants to pay it on, a friend of what you do. Copy the link from Money → Solidarity fund and send it however you like. They get a thank-you email with a reference; you get an email too.
Giving a funded placeWhen you give someone a reduced or free place from the fund, add their booking with Paid via set to Solidarity fund and Amount set to what the fund covers. The fund page shows what's left.

Who sees the box on the booking form

The box is one question with no event attached, so it appears on every event while the switch is on. Change its wording under Events → Booking questions (it's the one with no class or workshop). Give one event its own solidarity question and that wording is used there instead.

What the fund page shows

Given is every contribution actually paid (with a booking, or through the link), Spent on places is the funded places you've recorded, and In the fund now is the difference. Refunded bookings, and their contributions, drop out. A gift through the link is also listed under Money → Solidarity gifts with the giver's message.

A discount code never comes off a solidarity contribution — only off the price of the places. And the contribution is charged in the same card payment as the booking, so there's nothing extra to chase.
